Volunteers are the heart of the Humane Society of Scott County. From walking dogs who haven’t been outside all day to giving shy cats the gentle attention they need to come out of their shells, our volunteers make lifesaving work possible, every single day.

We ask for a $15 fee that covers the costs of your volunteer t-shirt. If the fee is a barrier to becoming a volunteer for us, let us know at the time of your orientation and we will waive it.
Most opportunities include mentorship training with a volunteer coordinator, key staff, or key volunteers (usually one session) before independent volunteering starts.
Please reach us at jdavis@hssc.us if you cannot find an answer to your question regarding our volunteer program.
Yes. Most volunteer roles we ask that you are 16 years old or older, but for dog walking and for transport roles, we ask that you are 18+. We can coordinate some group activities for younger groups, so reach out to jdavis@hssc.us for more information on that!
There is no required time commitment for volunteers. You are able to come volunteer as your schedule allows. We have found that for roles like dog walking, it can be helpful to come in more regularly to get to know the dogs better.
Most volunteer roles can be completed at any time of the day between 8 am and 6 pm. How long you volunteer is up to you. Whether you have 30 minutes to help with laundry or several hours to help with a larger project, we appreciate your support!
Each role is slightly different, but you will receive specific training on each role from our volunteer coordinator, another staff member, or a fellow volunteer to help show you the ropes. Our dog walking program has additional training sessions to help you get comfortable with the process.
As a non-profit, our budget is stretched thin. We prioritize as much money in our budget as possible to go to the animals, and fees for several hundred volunteer shirts really does add up which is why we ask for a fee. If paying a fee doesn't work for you, we are more than happy to waive that fee for you at the time of your orientation. We do not want this to be a barrier for volunteering, moreso just a way to help offset the costs of shirts.
We do not have a specific dress code, but we do ak that you wear your volunteer shirt as often as possible when volunteering as well as a name tag (provided by us). We also ask that you wear closed toe shoes as a safety measure.
