Animal Protection Services

Overview

Our Animal Protection Services division, formally known as Animal Control, responds to reports of animals running at large, abuse and neglect. We enforce laws set forth by the state of Iowa and ordinances designed by the cities we serve.  We are contractors for the cities we serve and regulations vary by town. 


Cities we serve: Argo, Bettendorf, Blue Grass, Buffalo, Davenport, Dixon, Durant (partial), Donahue, Eldridge, Le Claire, Long Grove, McCausland, Maysville, New Liberty, Panorama Park, Park View, Pleasant Valley, Princeton, Riverdale, Scott County rural, Walcott. 


Many of those cities, excluding Davenport, require you call your local police department first for further instruction. Many of their police departments respond first and call animal protection services if they need them.

Animals running at large

Please call Animal Protection Services at 563.388.6655 option 2 to report pets running at large. Please have available the nearest crossroad and direction the animal is heading to assist responding officers as we work to safely contain the animal.

Bite reports, Abuse and Neglect

Please call Animal Protection Services at 563.388.6655 option 2 immediately if you have been a part of an animal bite, or witness abuse & neglect within the cities we serve. If you can not reach this number, please call 563-388-3904 to reach the non-emergency police number. If you are in an emergency situation, please call 911.

Found an animal while the shelter is closed?

If you have found an animal in Scott County between the hours of 6pm to 8am, please call 563.388.3904 for further instruction. If you find an animal in Scott County from 8am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, please call 563.388.6655 option 2.

Local licensing information

The City of Davenport requires that all dogs and cats be licensed. Pet owners must purchase  a license for their pet within thirty days of the date the pet is initially inoculated for rabies and annually within thirty days’ time of the date of the current rabies vaccination. 

Licenses can be purchased at the Humane Society of Scott County or online at https://hssc.docupet.com/en_US/ with verification of a current rabies vaccination signed and administered by a licensed veterinarian.

Annual license fees are:

  • Neutered/spayed (altered) dog or cat – $10
  • Non-altered dog or cat – $30


The City of Bettendorf requires every dog over 6 months of age be licensed.  Licenses can be purchased at the Humane Society of Scott County or from Bettendorf City Hall.  Pet licenses must be purchased prior to January 31 of each calendar year.  Pet owners applying for a license must present a certificate of current rabies vaccination signed and administered by a licensed veterinarian.

Annual license fees are:

  • Neutered/spayed (altered) dog – $3
  • Non-altered dog – $25
  • Dog certified by veterinarian to be too old to alter – $3
